As Wolverhampton accountants, we spend most of our days helping people make sense of their numbers. But some things in life – the things that matter most – can’t be measured in spreadsheets.
At Get Smart Accountants, giving back to our community isn’t a marketing exercise or an afterthought. It’s something we live by. And this month, we’re proud to support a cause that’s especially close to our hearts: Compton Care, a local charity providing expert palliative, bereavement, and emotional support to people and families across our region, and Wolves Foundation, who bring hope and opportunity to our local community.
A Personal Mission: Taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks
On Saturday 14th June, our very own Paul Thompson will take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge – a gruelling 24-mile hike across the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough – all in aid of Compton Care and the Wolves Foundation.
For Paul, this isn’t just a fitness goal. It’s a heartfelt commitment to those who dedicate their lives to supporting others through theirs. It’s about showing up for the people who show up during life’s hardest moments, and helping ensure they can continue to do just that.
Why We Chose Compton Care
If you live in or around Wolverhampton, chances are you’ve heard of Compton Care. Many of us know someone who’s been supported by them – a quiet but powerful presence in times of crisis, stepping in with dignity, compassion, and unwavering care.
Our relationship with Compton is deeply personal.
Emma was just 11 years old when she lost her dad to cancer. She and her two sisters were unaware of the seriousness of his illness and were never given the chance to prepare or process what was happening. There was no counselling, no emotional support – just an unspoken expectation that they would cope.
This experience left a lasting impact on Emma. It’s why she feels so passionately that no child should have to navigate grief alone. Compton Care’s services for children and young people provide essential emotional support during these formative and traumatic moments, helping young minds begin to heal.
Paul’s experience was very different – because Compton Care was there.
When his stepdad Steve was diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, Compton stepped in. Steve found comfort in art therapy sessions and Paul’s mum found solace through Compton’s “Craft and Chat” support group for carers.
Compton also provided care for Paul’s birth father after a brain tumour diagnosis. Although they were no longer in close contact, it was a comfort to know he had that same compassionate support at the end.
These experiences are why we support Compton Care. Because no one should face loss or illness without the right help. And because we’ve seen, first-hand, the difference they make.
Living Our Values Beyond the Numbers
You don’t often hear “accountants” and “charity” in the same sentence – but at Get Smart, our work has always been about more than numbers. It’s about people. Our clients, their families, their futures – and the communities we all live and work in.
Taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge is one way we live out our company values:
- Empathy – We walk with and for others. Just as we support our clients with understanding and compassion, we stand in solidarity with families facing unimaginable loss.
- Collaboration – This challenge isn’t a solo effort. It’s a team mission involving other local businesses, and community – coming together for a shared cause.
- Authenticity – Our support for Compton isn’t performative. It’s real, it’s raw, and it’s rooted in personal stories that matter deeply to us.
- Responsibility – We believe businesses should play a positive role in society. That means taking action, showing up, and doing the right thing – whether it’s for our clients or our community.
This isn’t just a fundraiser. It’s a reflection of who we are and what we stand for.
How You Can Get Involved
Whether you’re part of our client community, a fellow local business, or simply someone who wants to make a difference – there are so many ways you can help:
- Donate – Every pound helps Compton Care continue their extraordinary work. You can support Paul’s challenge and make a donation via the link on our Charity page.
- Volunteer Your Time – Compton relies on an incredible team of volunteers. Whether it’s helping in their shops, assisting at events, or offering admin support at the hospice – even a few hours can make a meaningful impact.
- Spread the Word – Share this story. Talk about Compton Care with your family, friends, or business network. Awareness is powerful, it’s often the first step to action.
Final Thoughts
Supporting Compton Care and taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks isn’t just about physical distance. It’s a reminder that when we come together as a community – with care, with courage, and with purpose – we can overcome even the steepest climbs.
As Wolverhampton accountants, we’re proud to do our part. And we’d love for you to walk alongside us – in spirit, in steps, or in support.
Together, we can make a real difference.
